Day in Night

By Kathleen Kirk

We saw a softness shining in. I drew
the curtain, and there it was: let me name
it a miracle, day in night. I marveled. You
proposed a theory of reflection. We came

upstairs. Again, I drew aside the curtain
to reveal the softness of the light, its wide
expanse, an open hand, how it hurt
nothing but touched everything, even us, inside

the safe, warm house, fingering our hearts,
if we let it, through the windowpane.
Then I lay down, naked. Let me start
again, my love. Believe in me, if you can.

When you touch me now, breathe. Now look:
see my body glimmer in the dark.
